UNION COUNTY — A familiar face will soon be back at work in the Union County Clerk of Court’s Office only this time she’ll be the Clerk of Court.
When she announced her candidacy for Clerk of Court earlier this year, Melanie Lawson cited her more than 20 years experience in that office, experience that included tenures as Family Court Coordinator and Family Court Deputy Clerk as well as working in all other areas under the responsibility of the Clerk of Court. Lawson, who currently works as Building and Zoning Coordinator for the City of Union, said she felt her experience in the Clerk of Court’s Office would serve her well and enable her to provide the people of Union County with the highest level of customer service.
Lawson will get the opportunity to put that experience to work in providing the public with that level of service in the Clerk of Court’s Office as the people of Union County voted Tuesday to make her the new Clerk of Court.
A Democrat, Lawson received 7,090 votes or 59.41 percent and carried 20 precincts in Tuesday’s election while Republican Amy Austin received 4,839 votes or 40.54 percent and carried three precincts.
“I’m excited, I’m ecstatic, I can’t wait to get in office and begin helping the women who work there,” Lawson said. “I am very humbled at the amount of support I received. Thank you Union County for believing in me.”
Lawson praised Austin saying “I wish Amy the best, she’s done a wonderful job.”
When she takes office in January, Lawson will succeed June Miller as Clerk of Court with whom she worked during much of her time in the office. She reiterated how much she is looking forward to returning to the office and taking on the duties of Clerk of Court and serving the public.
“I will be as dedicated as I have always been to the citizens of Union County,” Lawson said.
