UNION — Six weeks after he fled deputies trying to arrest him for allegedly beating, choking and holding a woman against her will a Union man ended up in jail Wednesday afternoon after being spotted in a parking lot on the Duncan Bypass.

Christopher Deauntray Gist, 23, 120 Woodlawn Avenue, #1A, Union, is charged by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with domestic violence first-degree, kidnapping, and resisting arrest. Deputies also arrested Gist on a magistrate’s court bench warrant.

Gist is charged in connection with an incident that occurred at a residence on Peach Orchard Road in the Union area on June 3. The incident report states the victim told deputies that she and Gist, who she said was her boyfriend, were at a friend’s house arguing. The victim said that during the argument she attempted to leave, but Gist pulled her back into the house and attacked her, hitting her in the head with a liquor bottle and choking her to the point where she lost consciousness.

The report states deputies observed numerous marks on the victim’s legs, arms, and neck.

It further states that the victim said Gist took her phone from her and would not allow her to call anyone. The victim said Gist would also not let her leave. She said she laid down on the bed with Gist so he would leave her alone and in the hope that he would fall asleep.

When Gist finally fell asleep, the victim said she was able to get her phone and sneak out of the building. She said she then called her grandfather to come get her and she hid in the woods until he arrived. Her grandfather then brought her to the sheriff’s office to file a report about the incident.

The report states that the victim told deputies she felt like she needed medical attention and so she was taken to the Union Medical Center for evaluation.

A separate incident report states that later in the day deputies attempted to a serve a kidnapping warrant on Gist at his home on Woodlawn Avenue. The report states that when they arrived, deputies went to the front and back doors, but when a deputy knocked on the front door, Gist fled out a side door. Deputies pursued Gist, shouting he was under arrest, but the report states Gist kept running and that deputies finally lost sight of him as he headed toward Highland Avenue.

The Union County K9 Unit was subsequently called out but was unable to locate Gist who remained at large until Wednesday afternoon.

Sheriff David Taylor said Thursday that Gist was taken into custody after investigators with the Union County Drug Taskforce saw him in a parking lot on the Duncan Bypass. He said that the investigators were not actually looking for Gist at the time, but that when they saw him they recognized him and took him into custody.

Gist was still in jail as of Thursday afternoon.
