UNION COUNTY — Twenty-one people were arrested on a variety of drug charges over a two-day period during a drug round-up conducted by the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, Sheriff David Taylor announced that his narcotics officers had conducted “Operation Kick-Off to Summer,” an anti-drug sweep that began at 7 a.m. Monday. Taylor said that his office, the Chester County Sheriff’s Office and SLED served a search warrant at 460 Sonoco Road in Union County. He said that upon entering the house, officers located Tiffany Kershaw, Walter Spencer, and Shaquelle Barber along with another female and a small child.

Once everyone was secured, Taylor said the residence was searched. He said that during the search of Barber and his room, officers found a quantify of marijuana and seized a Nike shoe box containing $34,833 in cash. Taylor said that Barber, who he described as not being gainfully employed, told deputies about a quantity of marijuana in a rental truck in the yard. He said deputies seized the marijuana in the truck as well.

Taylor said officers seized a Springfield .45 caliber from Spencer who he said is a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing a firearm. He said officers also seized a quantity of marijuana from the bedroom that is shared by Spencer and Kershaw. The officers also seized $522 in cash from Walter Spencer, who Taylor said is also unemployed.

Kershaw was also arrested and charged with possession of marijuana.

Taylor said that all in all, a quantity of marijuana, $35,355 in cash, digital scales and a firearm were seized from the house and truck.

After the search of the residence at 460 Sonoco Road was completed, Taylor said the roundup began in earnest. He said that as of Tuesday afternoon 21 of the 28 people sought by his office have been arrested. Once the remaining seven are arrested, Taylor said there will be a total of 46 drug-related charges filed.

Sheriff Taylor stated that this is a continuing effort to fight the drug problem in Union County. Nearly half of these arrested in this round-up are unemployed and it is not because there are no jobs available in Union County. Sheriff Taylor went on to say that there have been several deaths that may be linked to drug overdoses, pending toxicology results to confirm those deaths. These arrests may help to aid in the prevention of future deaths.
