LUKESVILLE — A Lukesville man was arrested this week for allegedly shooting another man in the back during an argument Wednesday morning.

Rayfus Cunningham, 68, 708 Lukesville Road, Buffalo (Lukesville Community), is charged by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Maj. Robbie Hines of the Sheriff’s Office said that at 11:16 a.m. Wednesday, dispatch received a call from a person he described as “a good Samaritan” who said he’d heard what he thought were fireworks. Hines said the caller said when he went out to see what was going on he discovered that the sound had actually been a gunshot and that he saw a man in the field across from his home struggling to walk. He said the caller told the dispatcher that he approached the man who told him that he and Cunningham had gotten into an argument when Cunningham pulled out a pistol and shot him in the back abdomen area as he attempted to leave.

Hines said that deputies responding to the call went to the field to secure it and begin searching for evidence while investigators went to the hospital to question the victim. He said investigators also went to Cunningham’s home to speak to him and that shortly thereafter Cunningham was arrested and transported to the Union County Jail where he was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

The investigation is continuing and Hines said that anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have any other information pertinent to the case is asked to contact the Union County Sheriff’s Office and speak with Maj. Johnny Sherfield.
