UNION — A woman was killed and a child injured when they were ejected from their vehicle after it ran off the side of the road and overturned Thursday afternoon.
In a statement released Friday morning, Union County Coroner William E. Holcombe announced that his office and the SC Highway Patrol (SCHP) are investigating “a single vehicle collision that occurred around 4:40 p.m. in the 5400 block of the Whitmire Highway.”
Holcombe said the driver of the vehicle was “Katie Jane Morris, 303 West South Street, Union,“ who “was flown to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center where she later died.”
In his report on the accident, SCHP L/Cpl Gary Miller states that the vehicle was traveling south on US 176 (Whitmire Highway) south of the City of Union when it ran off the right side of the road, overturned, and ejected the driver and her passenger.
Miller said the driver was not wearing a seat belt and the passenger, a child, was improperly restrained at the time of the accident. He said the child was transported to Greenville Children’s Hospital.
Holcombe and Miller both stated that there was nothing further to report at the present time.
