UNION — An investigation is currently under way into an automobile accident Saturday evening that left a Union man dead and his wife and daughter injured.
In a statement released this (Sunday) morning, Union County Coroner William Holcombe announced that his office and the SC Highway Patrol are investigating the death of Robert G. Sprouse, 68, 311 Maple St., Union.
Holcombe stated that Sprouse died Saturday evening at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center following a single car collision that occurred around 6 p.m. in the 1400 block of SC 18 near Kelly Road.
In his report on the accident, L/Cpl. Gary Miller of the SC Highway Patrol stated that the accident occurred at 6:04 p.m Saturday, July 8 on SC 18 (Jonesville Highway) near Kelly Road .8 mile west of the City of Union.
Miller stated that the accident occurred when the 2006 Chevrolet pickup, which was traveling west, ran off the left side of the road, struck a mailbox, a gas line, and a tree.
The driver of the vehicle was Sprouse who Miller stated was wearing a seat belt but was still injured in the accident though he was neither ejected nor entrapped. Miller stated that Sprouse was transported by Union County EMS to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
There were two passengers in the vehicle with Sprouse, the first of whom Miller identified as Joan N. Sprouse, 64, of Union, who he stated was in the right front passenger seat. Miller stated that Joan Sprouse was also wearing a seat belt and was not ejected or entrapped, but was also injured. He sated that she was also transported by Union County EMS to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
The second passenger was identified by Miller as Rebecca Sweezy, 37, also of Union, who he stated was in the right rear passenger seat. Miller stated that Sweezy was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. He stated that she was injured and entrapped in the vehicle and had to be extracted by mechanical means. Sweezy was also transported by Union County EMS to the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
(Joan Sprouse is Robert Sprouse’s wife and Rebecca Sweezy is his daughter.)
In his press release, Holcombe stated that an autopsy was scheduled to be performed on Robert Sprouse’s body later today. He stated that there was no further information on the accident at the present time.
