UNION COUNTY — The Union Daily Times’ 2015 high school football season preview will be included in tomorrow’s (Friday, Aug. 21) edition.
The special preview section — titled “In the Footsteps of Champions”— will include photos and information about both the Union County Yellow Jackets and the Whitmire Wolverines to prepare readers for an enjoyable season.
The section will include schedules, rosters, photos and lots of information about players and teams’ upcoming seasons.
During an interview for the preview section, Union County Head Coach Steve Taneyhill discussed players to watch as well as the team’s overall mindset for the season, as their team motto has been “Together.”
Taneyhill also discussed his offense and defense, and he said with 15 out of 22 starters returning, experience will be a major asset for this year’s team. Taneyhill mentioned the Yellow Jackets’ new defensive coordinator — Coach Mark Razzano — who previously served as defensive coordinator at Gaffney High School, Blue Ridge High School, Spartanburg High School and Boiling Springs High School.
Whitmire Wolverines Head Coach Charlie Jenkins said his team will focus on “keeping it simple” this season. Jenkins said the bar was set pretty high last season, and anything less than a winning record and a home playoff game in November will be disappointing from his perspective.
Union County football players who will be featured in the preview section include six-foot-one, 300-pound defensive tackle No. 56 Deshawn Thompson; wide receiver Roscoe Johnson, who has already committed to play at the University of North Carolina after graduation; hard-hitting outside linebacker and four-year starter No. 15 TJ Glenn; and senior quarterback, No. 17 De’Airrius Smith, who discussed team leadership.
The preview section will also include information and photos regarding UCHS Cheerleaders and the Union County “Sting Machine” Marching Band. Copies of the preview section will be included in tomorrow’s paper, and they will also be available at The Union Daily Times, located at 100 Times Blvd. in Union.
