UNION COUNTY — More than 700 Broad River Electric customers in the lower part of Union County have lost power due to the storm system that passed through the county earlier this afternoon.
In a statement released shortly before 5 p.m., Broad River Electric Cooperative announced that this afternoon’s severe storm and tornado had caused more than 700 BREC members to lose power.
The press release states that most of those outages are in the Santuc and Whitmire Highway areas of Union County. In addition, a few dozen BREC members had lost power in the Draytonville/McKown’s Mountain community in Cherokee County.
It states that BREC members are encouraged to call the Cooperative’s phone line if they lose power at 1-866-266-7688.
In a telephone interview with The Union Times, BREC Community Development Manager Josh Crotzer said that Cooperative crews had been out working to restore power since the first outages were reported. Crotzer said that as of 5:30 p.m. all but 133 Cooperative members who had lost power have had it restored. He said that crews are continuing to work to restore power to the remaining Cooperative members who are still without it and that it is hoped all will be restored soon.
Members are encouraged to use the Cooperative’s outage map or follow on Facebook to stay up to date with the latest outage and restoration information.
