UNION COUNTY — The Union County School District will issue up to $3,690,000 in general obligation bonds to continue paying down the bonded indebtedness it incurred with the construction of Sims Middle School and Jonesville K-8 Elementary/Middle School.

The Union County Board of School Trustees voted Monday to approve the district’s participation in the annual South Carolina Association of Government Organizations bond issue. In approving the district’s participation, the board authorized a general obligation bond issue of no more than $3,690,000.

Finance Director Lynn Lawson said that the bond issue is “an annual routine” the district has engaged in since the first such issuance in 2006. Lawson said that the bonds are issued each year to pay off the bonded indebtedness the district incurred through the financing model it used to pay for the construction of the two schools. He said the model was used by school districts and local governments across the state when the district decided to use it to finance the schools’ construction.

Lawson said that the bonded indebtedness the district incurred with the construction of the schools was for 25 years and is scheduled to be paid off in 2031.
