Special Veterans Day Event
Veterans Day is Friday, November 11, 2016. Instead of a regular monthly meeting, American Legion Post 22 will have a banquet to celebrate the occasion, starting at 6 p.m., in the Veterans Memorial Lodge in Veterans Memorial Park in Union, SC. Persons participating in the night’s Chinese auction are advised to come in slightly earlier. The banquet will offer custom catered food including a chicken dish, and a desert, plus there will be live music from the Union County High School Chorus. Union County High School’s JROTC will present the colors.
Guest Speaker will be retired U.S. Army Colonel Ralph E. Inman. Col. Inman is the husband of Patricia A. Lawson, and has two sons, two grandsons, and two great-grandchildren. Col. Inman’s many awards include the Silver Star, two Legion of Merit medals, and three Bronze Stars and Purple Hearts. After his Army service, Col. Inman was heavily involved in establishing the 911 system throughout South Carolina, including serving as 911 Director of Greenville County. He also received the Public Safety 911 NENA Lifetime Achievement Award for Service.
This year, for the first time, Post 22 will also be paying for not only their own members and their spouses at the Banquet, but also for those of the other Union County Veterans Organizations. Specifically invited are current members of the Jonesville American Legion, Post 129, the Buffalo American Legion, Post 87, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6938, and the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 644. Members of all these organizations are asked to bring the up-to-date membership card for their organization to present at the door of the Lodge for the Banquet. Members of any of these veterans’ organizations wanting to bring more than one guest, and all other guests, requires the payment of $10 per person at the door in order to attend this unique event.
The Post also hopes that members will participate in as many other of the Union County Veterans Day Events as possible. This would include the Veterans Breakfast at Augsburg Lutheran Church at 8 a.m., the Veterans Day Parade starting at 10:30 a.m., and the Veterans Day Ceremony at the Union Main Street War Memorial at 11 a.m.
