UNION — Supporters of a local athlete are continuing their efforts this morning to raise funds to send her to the 2015 Junior Olympic Games in August.
Alexis Garrett — a rising senior at Union County High School — has participated in track for the past six years at UCHS. This summer, she began running with the BSYAA (Boiling Springs Youth Athletic Association) AAU team.
Last month, Garrett participated in the region meet, placing second in the 100-meter hurdles and high jump, where she set her personal record at 15.11 and 5’0, respectively. That meet qualified her for the 2015 Junior Olympic Games, which will be held in Norfolk, Va. Aug. 1-8.
In order to raise funds for the trip, Garrett’s supporters held a fundraiser at the Union County School District Office this past Thursday with fish, hot dogs, leg quarters, baked beans, cole slaw, and sweet tea sold during the event.
If you missed out on helping Garrett while also enjoying some good food during Thursday’s event, you’ll have a second chance today as her supporters are again holding a fundraiser this morning.
Imani Richard was one of the Garrett supporters taking part in Thursday’s fundraiser at the School District Office. She said that the fundraising effort will continue today at the Union County Stadium.
Richard said that, as on Thursday, this morning’s fundraiser will also have fish, hot dogs, leg quarter, bake beans, cole slaw, and sweet tea for sale. She said today’s fundraiser will get under way at 10:30 a.m.
