UNION COUNTY — The partnership between the Union County School District and Spartanburg Community College continues to deepen and expand with the district offering new dual credit courses through the Union Campus of SCC.

In a presentation to the Union County Board of School Trustees Monday evening, UCSD Director of Instruction and Accountability Cindy Langley announced the new dual credit courses that she said the district will offer in partnership with SCC beginning in August.

“In order for the students to take six hours of college credit at Spartanburg Community College which is required for lottery funding we are adding two new courses,” Langley said. “These General Education courses are available only to those students who are enrolled in a technical program of study at Spartanburg Community College.

“Math 155 will be offered in the fall and it can count as the fourth required math course for graduation,” she said. “English 165 Professional Communication will be offered in the spring and it will count as an elective for graduation. Students who are taking Mechatronics II on the Union Campus of Spartanburg Community College will be able to take these courses.”

Langley that while these dual credit courses will be offered at the Union Campus of SCC, others will be offered at the CATE Center, though regardless of their location the courses are still part of the partnership between the district and the college.

“We also offer dual credit health courses with SCC on the Union County High School CATE Center campus,” Langley said. “In the fall we will offer Medical Terminology (AHS 102) and in the spring we will offer Medical Vocabulary and Anatomy (AHS 104).”

Langley said that in addition to the new courses being offered, existing courses will continue to be offered through the partnership with SCC at its Union campus. She said there will also be expanded learning opportunities for those students in the coming school year.

“Students will continue to take welding courses in the fall and spring at the Union Campus of Spartanburg Community College,” Langley said. “As part of the welding course they will also take a class in Print Reading.”

The announcement of the dual credit courses comes on the heels of plans to move the school district’s Adult Education program from its current location on Main Street in downtown Union to the Union Campus of SCC. Langley said the new dual credit courses and the relocation of Adult Education are two separate issues, but added that they are both designed to help the district realizes a very important goal.

“They are two separate things, but it is all designed to improve educational opportunities for students,” Langley said.
