UNION COUNTY — The Union County Dixie Girls Darlings Softball Team went to the Dixie Girls State Tournament in Moncks Corner in hopes of winning the State Championship but ended up winning something a lot better.

The tournament, which was held Friday, July 12-Wednesday, July 17, saw the Darlings play four games, winning two and losing two.

Coach Mandy Davis said Tuesday that in their first game of the tournament, the Darlings lost to Aynor 12-9. In their second game, however, Davis said the Darlings defeated Hannahan 10-6. Davis said the Darlings won again in their third game, defeating Moncks Corner 14-13. In their fourth game, however, the Darlings did not fare so well, falling 15-0 to Lancaster, the team that went on to win the State Championship.

Overall, the Darlings finished third in the tournament, an achievement that Davis said reflected the team’s talent and tenacity against far more experienced teams.

“Unlike the teams we were up against, we didn’t get to the tournament by winning a district, we went straight to the State Tournament,” Davis said. “Those teams were like travel ball teams that have been playing together for years while our team had only been playing together for weeks.

“In most of the games we played the other team would pull ahead and we’d been trailing, but the girls would come back and score four or five runs,” she said. “The girls had a lot of heart and a lot of determination and they were really on fire.”

Standouts among the Darlings were Jada Vines who Davis said “hit an in the park home run,” while Alaina Rector and Chloe Steadman “both had triples.” Davis said that Ava Millwood, Alayna Roberts, Maddi Robison, and Maggie Beth Betenbaugh were all “very strong at bat.” However, Davis said that “all the girls of the team stepped up and hit in a time of need.”

Though they didn’t win the State Championship, the Darlings — and the fans who accompanied them to the tournament — came away winners nevertheless when the team received the Dixie Girls State Tournament Good Sportsmanship Award.

During the tournament, officials were not only keeping track of the score and other game stats, they were also paying attention to how the players on each team — along with their coaches as well as their fans in the bleachers — conducted themselves during the games. They were doing so in order to decide who should receive the Dixie Girls State Tournament Good Sportsmanship Award which honors the team whose conduct embodies the ideal of sportsmanship.

The Darlings embodied that ideal on the field and so did their fans in the bleachers and as a result they brought the Good Sportsmanship Award back to Union County.

While it would have been great if the Darlings had won the State Championship as well and went on to compete as Team South Carolina in the Dixie Girls World Series, the fact that they displayed such outstanding character to the point where they were recognized for such should make all of Union even more proud of these young ladies. By showing such outstanding sportsmanship the Darlings represented Union County well and showed that they embody all that is best in this community. That should make us all proud of them, their coaches, their families, and their fans.

So congratulations to the young ladies of the Union County Dixie Girls Darlings Softball Team, we wish you all the best, not only on the field but off it and throughout life. May you always display such exemplary character in all things you do in life, because if you do you’ll be winners every time.
