LANCASTER — Union County was defeated by Lancaster in the final minute of Friday night’s game.
After Friday night’s 33-22 loss to Lancaster, Union County fell to a 3-6 record on the season.
The Yellow Jackets struck first in Friday’s game when Doug Brannon intercepted a pass and returned it 46 yards for the touchdown, giving Union County a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Their next score came with a 20-yard field goal at the end of the quarter, putting Union County ahead 10-0.
In the second quarter, Union County’s defense held Lancaster on 4th down with a big tackle for loss by AJ Hunter. Union County’s Shi Smith scored from three yards away, and the Yellow Jackets took a 16-0 lead, which they kept throughout the first half.
In the third quarter, Lancaster fired back with a touchdown, cutting the Yellow Jackets’ lead to 16-7.
Lancaster scored again on the first play of the 4th quarter, making the score 16-14, with the Yellow Jackets still in the lead.
Union County QB De’Airrius Smith ran in a touchdown from three yards out, giving the Yellow Jackets a 22-14 lead over the Bruins. Lancaster answered back with a score of their own, making the score 22-20.
With one minute left in the game, Lancaster scored again, taking a 27-22 lead over Union County. Lancaster then recovered a fumble and returned it for the touchdown, getting the win over Union County with a final score of 33-22.
This week, Union County will go on the road to take on the Chester Cyclones in the final game of the regular season.
