CARLISLE — For the 15th year in a row the children of the Carlisle community and their families will enjoy an afternoon of family fun and receive supplies to start the new school year with during the Town of Carlisle’s Annual “Back To School Festival.”
Each year for the past 14 years the Town of Carlisle has held its Back To School Festival to provide the community’s school children and their families with an afternoon of family friendly fun. The town also holds the event to distribute school supplies to the children of the Carlisle community who will be starting or returning to school.
This year’s Back To School Festival will be held Saturday, Aug. 18 from 1-6 p.m. at the Carlisle Playground at the intersectio of Pinckney and Cambridge streets.
As in previous years the Back To School Festival will feature fashion and talent shows, games for both children and adults, prizes, music, and food.
Mayor Mary Ferguson-Glenn said Thursday that this year’s festival will also feature horse rides and a bounce house.
The families with school age children in attendance at the event will receive free book bags filled school supplies. The goal of the town is to help children and their families be prepared for the start of the new school year by providing them with supplies the children can use at school.
Ferguson-Glenn said that, as in previous years, the book bags will have such traditional school supplies as notebook paper, book binders, pencils, and pens. She said that the supplies in the book bags will be based on the grades the students receiving them will be attending, adding that this reflects the growth of the festival over the years.
“Over the years this festival has grown,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “We’re now distributing more book bags than we have previously and for more grades, including high school.
“This is for kids 4K and up and the supplies they contain will vary depending on the grades,” she said. “This year we’ll have book bags for elementary, middle, and high school kids for them for the start of the new school year.”
Ferguson-Glenn added that children receiving the supplies must be present to get them and they must be accompanied by an adult family member.
For students in the Union County School District the 2018-2019 school year begins Monday, Aug. 20.
