UNION COUNTY — Seats on the Union County Board of School Trustees, Union City Council, Carlisle Town Council and other non-partisan governing bodies in Union County will be on the ballot in the November general election.
Non-partisan offices are those where the candidates do not run as the nominee of a particular political party, but simply as individuals.
In Union County, non-partisan offices include the seats on the Union County Board of School Trustees, the seats on the councils and the mayor’s offices of the county’s four incorporated municipalities (Union, Jonesville, Carlisle, and Lockhart), and the seats on the boards of the county’s fire districts and various other special districts.
This year, seats on the school board, the councils of Union and Carlisle, and the boards of four fire districts and one local watershed will be on the November ballot.
Filing for the school board, fire district, and watershed seats opened this past Monday (July 16) at noon and will close at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 15.
Candidates seeking to run for the school board, fire district, and watershed seats must file to do so at the Union County Voter Registrar’s Office which is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
On the ballot will be the Districts 3, 4, 5, 8, and 9 seats on the Union County Board of School Trustees.
The seats are currently held by trustees Mike Massey (3), Gene “Doc” Lipsey (4), Jane Hammett (5), Wanda All (8), and Jane Wilkes (9).
Union County Voter Registrar Darlene Pettit said that as of Thursday the only candidate to file to run for school board was Mike “Brokearm” Cohen who is seeking the District 5 seat.
Also on the ballot will be a total of 12 seats on the following fire boards:
• Carlisle Fire Board — 2
• Santuc Fire Board — 2
• Monarch Fire Board — 2
• Jonesville Fire Board — 3
• Southside Fire Board — 3
Petit said that no one has so far filed to run for any of those seats.
Two seats on the governing board of the Browns Creek Watershed will also be on the ballot.
Pettit said that no one has filed to run for those seats either.

The seats on the Carlisle Town Council currently held by council members Ann Stevens and Darlene Small will be on the ballot in the Town of Carlisle.
Filing for the two seats is now open and will close at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 15.
Persons wanting to run for those seats must file to do so at the Carlisle Town Hall which is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

In the City of Union, the Districts 1, 2, and 5 Union City Council seats will be on the ballot in November.
The seats are currently held by council members Tommy Anthony (1), Robert Garner (2), and Pamela G. Sloss (5).
Filing for the city council seat has not yet opened, but when it does candidates for the seats will have to file to do so at the City of Union Municipal Clerk’s Office in the City of Union Municipal Building.
