Read Luke 22:54-62
Peter followed at a distance.
— Luke 22:54 (NIV)
PRAYER: Dear Lord, forgive our hesitation to show our love for you. Strengthen us so that others may know you through us. Amen.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Jesus will strengthen me for the work he is calling me to do.
When it comes to the issue of religion in American society, those who would drive religion, especially Christianity, from the public square, often invoke the concept of separation of church and state, a concept most famously voiced by Founding Father Thomas Jefferson. That concept, however, long predates Jefferson and in fact originates with Jesus Christ who, in confounding a conspiracy by His enemies, separated church and state aka God and caesar forever. By doing so, Jesus relegated caesar aka the state to the things of this world which are only for a season and reserved to God the things that are eternal. In so doing, Christ forever limited the power the state aka caesar may wield over humanity and gave the human race the freedom that is their right as beings created in the image of God. The truth is that Christ, unlike His opponents, knows that freedom does not originate with humanity but with its creator, and that those who deny this are denying the basis for all human freedom which, if they prevail in forcing society to embrace that denial, will vanish. No, true freedom — like salvation — comes from God not ceasar. Those who forget that will lose will lose not only earthly freedom, but eternal salvation as well.
