UNION COUNTY — While it’s still the middle of summer the truth is that each day that passes means the start of the new school year is getting closer and that means it will soon be time to register your children for school and that means going to their school(s) to get the necessary paperwork to do so and maybe even waiting in line with other parents doing the same.

Or does it?

What if you don’t have to do it that way? What if you could instead do it without leaving your home?

Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

Well, this year you’ll have that option as you will be able to register your children for school online if you so desire.

In a statement released Monday, the Union County School District announced that “registration for the 2018-2019 school year will now be available online. In years past it was necessary to fill out redundant paperwork, sometimes at multiple schools to register students for school. In an effort to reduce paper usage and make registration faster and more efficient for students and parents, UCSD has partnered with PowerSchool Registration to allow most processes to be done online.”

The press release states that “the registration process is still being finalized and will be up and running soon. Each student will be sent a letter with instructions and a ‘Snap Code’ which will be used to identify the student. Parents will need to create an account the first time, but can link multiple students to their account so that information such as addresses, phone numbers, parent information, etc. can be copied over from student to student. This should cut down on the redundant work typically seen on the printed forms.

While online option will eliminate the need for much of the paperwork required in previous years, the press release states that “certain forms, such as medical records and prescription medicine forms will still need to be printed and filled out by hand for now.”

As for those parents who are unable to go online or who prefer to register their children in person at their school, they will still be able to do so. In those cases, however, they will still be able to use the online option as the schools will provide them with computer access to do so.

The press release states that “the new registration process will not replace the option to come to the schools and meet teachers, see class locations, and any other student group function. There will still be days setup by each school for these activities. Parents and students who do not have access to computers and internet will be able to use a machine setup in stations at each location.”

Making registration easier and faster is the goal of the new online process and plans are for even improvements in the future.

The press release states that “we hope that this new process will be easy and more accurate than the old paper process. We will continue to add features to the process in future years to make it even easier and faster to register your students. Please be on the lookout for the letters in the next couple of weeks with your students information in them. We are looking forward to a great 2018-2019 school year!”
