A spectacular 4th of July finish

BUFFALO — The nearly week-long celebration of America’s Independence came to an end Wednesday with a fireworks display over the Buffalo Mill Pond.

Wednesday July 4, 2018 was the 242nd anniversary of America declaring its independence from the British Empire on July 4, 1776. Since then, July 4 has been known as Independence Day or the 4th of July and celebrated in the United States of America, both as a nation and by its constituent communities.

One of those communities is Union County which is home to a total of three 4th of July celebrations. The celebrations are held in the West Springs Community, the City of Union, and the Buffalo Community.

This year, each celebration was held on a different day, allowing the people of Union County the opportunity to attend and enjoy all three.

West Springs started it all last Saturday with a 4th of July parade in the morning, a BBQ sale at lunch, and the main program featuring food, music and fireworks that evening.

Next was “Light Up the Lake” in Union which was held Tuesday at Veteran’s Memorial Park and featured an evening of food, live music, and a fireworks display over Foster Park Lake.

Buffalo’s celebration is “Party at the Pond” and it was held Wednesday evening. Those attending gathered along Main Street and around the Buffalo Mill Pond where the fireworks display would take place. As they waited for the show to begin, those in attendance got to enjoy food and drink provided by vendors, purchase other items from other vendors, socialize with one another, and listen to music provided by Main Event DJ Gregg Maness. Some even danced, as couples or in lines, to the music.

Finally, it was time for the fireworks display that lit up the skies over the mill pond, capping off an evening — and a week — of family-friendly, patriotic fun.

While this year’s week of celebration is over, America has a 243rd birthday coming up next year and no doubt we will be looking forward to yet another week of celebration — in West Springs, Union, and Buffalo — of this great nation and the freedom we enjoy as Americans.
