Starks receives Master’s Degree

UNION — A former Union resident who received received her Master’s Degree will soon be counseling students at a high school in Charleston.

Briana C. Starks, M.Ed. is a Union native and 2011 graduate of Union County High School. She is the daughter of Pamela G. Sloss of Union and Dr. B. Chad Starks of Greenville. Her grandparents are Robert E. Garner and Emma L. Garner, both of Union, and Betty Starks and Calvin Starks of Columbia.

After completing high school, Starks attended Coastal Carolina University in Conway where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a minor in journalism.

On May 12, 2018, Starks earned her Masters of Education in School Counseling from Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, VA.

Starks currently resides in Charleston where she will be a high school guidance counselor as Summerville High School beginning in the fall. She said she hopes to instill in the students she counsels the importance of preparing now for the future.

“‘The future belongs to those who prepare for it today’ is my favorite quote by Malcolm X,” Starks said. “I hope I can instill this message in my students as I watch them grow. ‘My future is now.’”
