BUFFALO — America’s 242nd birthday will be celebrated this evening with music, food, and fireworks during the Buffalo Community’s Annual “Party at the Pond” 4th of July celebration.

On July 4, 1776, the United States of America declared its independence from the British Empire, an event that forever made that day Independence Day for this country, a day of celebration for all Americans in the more than two centuries since that first 4th of July.

In Union County this year, America’s independence is being celebrated not once, not twice, but three times in three different communities on three different days.

The first celebration was this past Saturday when the West Spring Community held its 4th of July celebration with a parade that morning following by a lunchtime BBQ sale and then continued with an evening of music, food, and fireworks.

The next celebration was this past Tuesday when Union held “Light Up the Lake” at Veteran’s Memorial Park, an evening of live music and food on the banks of and fireworks in the skies above Foster Park Lake.

The third and final 4th of July celebration in Union County will be Buffalo’s Party at the Pond which will be held this evening.

Festival Committee Chairman Jim Maness said Tuesday that Party at the Pond will begin at 6 p.m. and will feature music provided by Main Event DJ Gregg Maness and, at 6:45 p.m. Rev. Ricky Cook and his family will sing gospel music. He said food and other items will be for sale by vendors including Tommy Driggers, Kerry Wood, the Buffalo Peanut Lady, Lexie’s Icees and many more including one vendor who will be selling jewelry.

At dark, there will be a fireworks show presented by the Festival Committee using fireworks furnished by Joey English Fireworks.

Party at the Pond is a sponsored event and this year’s sponsors are:

• Midway BBQ

• Dairi-O

• Andy’s

• Buffalo Pawn Shop

• Donna Becknell Motor Trucking

• Union County Councilman David Sinclair

• Union County Supervisor Frank Hart

• Buffalo Seafood

• Brian’s Berry Farm

• Duncan Masonic Lodge

• The Mill Pond Gang

• Buffalo American Legion Post 87 Baseball Team

• Buffalo Community Center

With Party at the Pond, Union County’s week of celebrating America’s 242nd birthday will come to an end, but not the pride that comes from being an American, a pride that will continue through to America’s next birthday and all those yet to come. Whether we live in Buffalo, Union, West Springs or any of the other communities that make up Union County, we are all proud to be Americans and proud of our country and the freedoms we enjoy as citizens of this great nation.
