UNION — The Union Music Club has selected Katie Wagner to be the recipient of the Boinest Morgan Medal for excellence in piano study. This medal is awarded annually in memory of Mrs. Genie Boinest Morgan, who taught piano in Union for many years.
Katie is the daughter of Christine Kincheloe and Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Wagner. She is the granddaughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Kincheloe, the late Dr. and Mrs. Keith Wagner, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Lawter.
Katie participates in the STAR Celebration auditions each year at Converse College. This year, she received her gold cup for six years of participating in the memorized solos category. Last year she received her gold cup for three years of participation in the hymn playing category. She has also participated in the written theory test and the piano trio ensemble categories. Katie has taken piano lessons from Suzy Smith since she was in third grade.
Katie sings in the choir at Grace United Methodist Church under the direction of Mr. Tommy Bishop. Also, she has led the music at Vacation Bible School for the last few years at her Church.
Katie is a tenth grader at Union County High School, and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Jr. Civitan Club. She is a member of the Gifted and Talented music class under the leadership of Mr. Tom Mancine.
On Tuesday, May 8, Katie and her GT music classmates presented a program of 1970’s music at the Union Music Club monthly meeting. This meeting was at the First Baptist Church Chapel. At this meeting, Katie also performed the piano piece “Dance of the Wind’ by Timothy Brown. Following her piano performance, Katie was presented with the Boinest Morgan Medal by Union Music Club President Nancy Kennedy and club Treasurer Rev. Sanders Read.
