4 receive Music Club scholarships

UNION — The Union Music Club has selected Ryan West, Kayleigh Miller, Meredith Foster and Maisie Fisher as recipients of their scholarships for the 2018-2019 school year. Ryan will receive the Cornelia Greer Walker Scholarship and Kayleigh, Meredith and Maisie will be recipients of the Nancy Lewis Wilburn Scholarships.


Ryan West, 22, is a senior at Charleston Southern University. He is the son of Gene and Tammy West and the grandson of Mary and Maurice Hyder, Wade Wilson and the late Grady and Nellie West.

Ryan is a music education major at Charleston Southern. Ryan is involved in percussion ensemble, steel band, marching band, wind ensemble, symphonic band and jazz band. He takes percussion and piano lessons at Charleston Southern. He is a drummer and pianist at Faith Goose Creek Church. Ryan plans to pursue a masters degree in percussion performance after this year.

While at Union County High School, Ryan participated in the band and indoor percussion group. He was a piano student of Suzy Smith and received both the Arion Band award and the Boinest Morgan Medal from the Union Music Club.


Kayleigh Miller, 18, is a sophomore at Columbia College. She is the daughter of Dr. Lance Miller and Dr. Patricia Bouknight and the granddaughter of James and Donna Bouknight, Bride Miller and the late Skip Miller.

Kayleigh is a speech-language pathology and music double major with a minor in psychology. At Columbia College, she takes voice, piano and guitar lessons and is a member of the concert choir as well as the High C’s voice ensemble.

Prior to college, Kayleigh was a member of the Gifted and Talented music class at Union County High School and completed 11 years of classical guitar lessons with Mr. Michael Miller at the Lawson Academy of the Arts and 3 years of piano lessons with Suzy Smith.


Meredith M. Foster is a junior at Presbyterian College where she is pursuing a degree in chemistry with a minor in mathematics. She is the daughter of Charles and Miranda Foster. While at PC, she has participated in Bella Voce and the Presbyterian College Choir. She is studying voice under Ms. Lucia Svatonova Hughes.

While a student at Union County High School, Meredith was a member of the Gifted and Talented Class and was a vocal student of Dr. Cathy Siarris for nine years at the Lawson Academy of the Arts.


Maisie Fisher, the daughter of Frank and Tammy Fisher, just completed her junior year at Presbyterian College. At Presbyterian College, Maisie has taken piano for three years with Dr. Karen Buckland and is a member of the wind ensemble, pep band and a member of the Delta Omicron music fraternity. While at Union County High School, Maisie was a member of the gifted talented class, was a piano student of Suzy Smith, and was a recipient of the Boinest Morgan Medal. She was salutatorian of her graduating class

On May 17, Maisie was diagnosed with leukemia. She is currently receiving treatment at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville. She will miss fall semester but when she has had time to recovery from her treatments she will resume her studies and receive her scholarship from Union Music Club as well as her various other scholarships.


On Friday, July 20 at 7 p.m., USCU and the Union Music Club will host a talent show fundraiser for Maisie at the USC Union Auditorium. This is not a ticketed event but donations of any amount will be received at the door. There will be no cost in putting on this event and 100 % of donations collected will go directly to Maisie to help defray the cost of battling this illness.

Mr. Gary Hipp, who is a bagpipe instructor at Presbyterian College will present prelude music for about 20 minutes prior to the 7 p.m. start time of the event. Please come early to enjoy the bagpipe music that he will perform.

The three other union music club scholarship recipients: Ryan West, Kayleigh Miller and Meredith Foster will perform on the program.

There will be solo performances on piano, banjo, guitar, and french horn as well as beautiful vocal performances. There will be dance numbers, a string group number, a children’s choir number and a mime group performance. The program will have a rich variety of styles of music.
