UNION COUNTY — It is that time of year again, when boys and girls from Union County’s Dixie programs participate in district and in-state all-star tournaments, with the hopes of reaching the Dixie World Series. Both the Union County Dixie Youth and Union County Dixie Girls organizations will send representatives to tournaments all over South Carolina to represent Union.
The all-star tournaments got underway this past weekend when the Dixie Youth Five and Six Year Old Coach Pitch Team traveled over to Lancaster for the District Tournament. The coach pitch team is coached by Brian Henderson, Michael Garner, Brett Shugart, Jana Manasco, and Heath Gregory. The team finished in second place in the district but qualified for the Dixie Youth State Tournament which will be held next weekend in Columbia. One of the Union County coaches was recognized for his good sportsmanship, manners, being humble and considerate of others. Brett Shugart received the recognition during the trophy presentation after the two-day tournament.
The Dixie Youth “O”zone State Tournament will be held at Timken Sports Complex in Union beginning Friday, July 6.
Dixie Girls All-Star play will begin this week with the district tournaments. Three age groups will play their district tournaments right here in Union at Timken Sports Complex. The Darlings, Angels, and Ponytails age groups will play starting on Thursday at Timken with games beginning at 6 p.m.
In the Darlings age group, Union County will play at 6:30 p.m. on field six against Boiling Springs, while at 6:30 p.m. on field four Inman will play Byrnes (D5). In the Angels, Union County will play Greer at 6 p.m. on field seven and Byrnes will play Mauldin on the same field at 7:30 p.m. In the Ponytails, Byrnes will play Union County at 6 p.m. on field three and Union County will play Boiling Springs on field three at 7:30 p.m.
