‘Rock Painting Party’ kick-off

UNION — How would you like you and your children to go on a “Musical Magical Tour,” experience “Science on Wheels,” enjoy a live performance by an “African Dance and Drum” troupe, a live performance by a “Caribbean Drums and Dance” band, and learn some fun and educational things about “critters?”

While we’re at it, how would you and your children also like to enjoy some “Movies Under the Stars” this summer and other fun things and kick it all off with some “rock painting” this Wednesday.

If you said yes, then the Union County Carnegie Library has got a fun summer planned for you and your children to share.

Summer Reading Kick-Off

Things get started this Wednesday (June 6) at USC Union’s Truluck Activity Center, 103 North Church Street, Union, where from 1-4 p.m the library will hold a “Rock Painting Party” that you and your family are invited to attend and enjoy. The library will provide the rocks for you and your children to paint and the paint to paint them with.

Wednesday’s Rock Painting Party is the kick-off for both the library’s annual Summer Reading Program and the series of community events it will be hosting at the Truluck Activity Center through June and July.

“We’re gearing up for our Summer Reading Program which we do every summer,” Library Assistant Director Taylor Atkinson said. “We’ll have a variety of events and we’re partnering with USC Union to be able to host those events. Everything will be held at Truluck.”

While the Summer Reading Program began this past Monday, Atkinson said Wednesday’s Rock Painting Party will be the “big kick-off event” and that “everybody is invited.”

The Summer Reading Program runs through July 30 and includes the following events on the following dates:

• Dads Rock — Thursday, June 14 from 2:30-4 p.m.

• Sounds of Nature: Water — Wednesday, June 20 from 2:30-4 p.m.

• Sounds of Nature: Animals — Thursday, June 28 from 2:30-4 p.m.

• Music Around the World — Wednesday, July 11 from 2:30-4 p.m.

• Pete the Cat — Thursday, July 19 from 2:30-4 p.m.

• End of Summer Dance Party — Thursday, July 26 from 1-4 p.m.

All Summer Reading events will be held at the Truluck Activity Center.

To sign up for the Summer Reading Program visit the sign-up kiosks at the library’s satellite locations at the USC Union Library, Jonesville Town Hall Senior Center, Jacob’s Well in Lockhart, and the Carlisle Town Hall.

Atkinson said that “our Summer Reading program will be hosted online at http://unionlibsc.readsquared.com/. Register online and log hours read and library programs attended to earn prizes.”

The flyer advertising the program states that any and all prizes won by Summer Reading participants must be redeemed by Friday, Aug. 10.

Community Events

Wednesday’s Rock Painting Party will also help kick-off the Community Events the library is hosting this summer including “Professor Whizzpop’s 2018 Musical Magical Tour,” Roper Mountain Science Center’s “Science on Wheels: It’s a Breeze,” the Deninufay African Drum & Dance Co., the Pantasia Steel Band’s “Caribbean Drums and Dance,” and “Critter Keeper’s Learning, Animals, and Fun!”

• Professor Whizzpop’s 2018 Musical Magical Tour

According to its website (www.professorwhizzpop.com) Professor Whizzpop’s 2018 Musical Magical Tour is “a brand new program designed to get your Summer Reading crowd rocking out to books! In this amazing musical medley of mashed up magic you’ll be introduced to the latest in musical technology, we will “Rock in our School Shoes” with Pete the Cat and even play the world’s most popular tune LIVE with the Seals on the Bus. This hilarious mix tape of magic, music and books will be the high note of your summer!”

Professor Whizzpop’s 2018 Musical Magical Tour will be this Thursday (June 7) at 11 a.m. at the Truluck Activity Center.

• Roper Mountain Science Center’s Science on Wheels: It’s a Breeze

The website (ropermountain.org) asks “how is a beach ball like an airplane wing? How can air be used to crush a soda can? How can you fill up a 10 foot long bag with air using only one breath? We’ll find out in this fun and interactive assembly that demonstrates how air pressure affects our everyday environment. Audience members will discover how to explore the air, even though they cannot see it. These experiments are guaranteed to BLOW them away!!”

Roper Mountain Science Center’s Science on Wheels: It’s a Breeze will be this Friday (June 8) at 3 p.m. at the Truluck Activity Center.

• Deninufay African Drum & Dance Co.

According to its Facebook page, Deninufay is an African Drum and Dance Company located in Charleston, SC and owned by Mrs. Charlene Horlbak. The company performs “ecstatic traditional African dance accompanied by live African Drum ensemble” and that its mission is to “inspire and empower the lives our youth!”

Deninufay African Drum & Dance Co. will perform Saturday, July 7 at 11 a.m. at the Truluck Activity Center.

• Pantasia Steel Band’s Caribbean Drums and Dance

According to its website (pantasiasteelband.com) Pantasia “is a SC Arts Commission Approved Performance Ensemble and our director, Kimberly M. Roberts, is an International Artist-in-residence, author, and certified teacher who has worked with more than 300 schools!” It further states that “Pantasia is guaranteed to be the most educational and kid-friendly steel band you will ever find.”

Pantasia Steel Bank will perform its Caribbean Drums and Dance concert on Thursday, July 12 at 3 p.m. at the Truluck Activity Center.

• Critter Keeper’s Learning, Animals, and Fun!

What can you expect from a show by the Critter Keeper? Lots of critters, of course, and not just any critters, but snakes, lizards, arthropods, mammals, and amphibians. According to its website (critterkeeperupstate.com) those attending the show can expect “fun, excitement, surprises, and the unexpected.”

Critter Keeper’s Learning, Animals, and Fun! will be presented Monday, July 30 at 3 p.m. at the Truluck Activity Center.

Atkinson said the library is able to offer these Community Events because of the following sponsors:

• Hart Insurance Agency

• David Sinclair Automotive

• Private Donors

Movies Under the Stars

Another annual summertime offering of the library’s is its Movies Under the Stars program of family-friendly movies show in June and July.

“Last year we had our Movies Under the Stars program and we’re doing it again this year,” Atkinson said.

The following movies will be shown the following evenings:

• The Incredibles — Monday, June 11

• Wonder — Monday, June 18

• The Lego Ninjago Movie — Monday, June 25

• The Greatest Showman — Monday, July 2

• Coco — Monday, July 9

• A Wrinkle In Time — Monday, July 16

• Ferdinand — Monday, July 23

The flyer advertising Movies Under the Stars urges the public to “join us starting at 8 p.m.” and that the movie “will begin at sundown.”

It cautions, however, that “movies are subject to change.”

Movies Under the Stars will be held outside of Truluck Activity Center.

Those planning to attend are urged to “bring your family, friends, and a blanket.”

Snacks will be available for purchase.

Storytime

The library will also have its weekly “Storytime” program every Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Atkinson said that Storytime will be held each Tuesday in June, July, and August at Truluck Activity Center except June 12 when, due to the primaries, it will be held in the USC Union Community Room.

Teen Lock-In

Another event the library will again offer this year is the “Teen Lock-In” for middle and high school age youth.

“Last summer we partnered with the recreation department to have a teen lock-in at Timken (Sports Complex),” Atkinson said. “We’re doing that again this year on July 13.”

The Teen Lock-In will be held Friday, July 13 from 6-10 p.m. and, according to the flyer advertising the event, is for “rising 6th-12th graders.”

It further states that anyone under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

The event will feature food, fun, music, and games.

The Timken Sports Complex is located at 725 Rice Avenue, Extension, Union.
