UNION — The ability to understand and do math is one of the cornerstones of the educational process and students at Foster Park Elementary School are gaining that ability.
Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary and Thesaurus define mathematics as “the science of numbers and their properties, operations, and relations and with shapes in space and their structure and measurement.”
At Foster Park Elementary School students in Mrs. Jan Ivey’s class are not only taking instruction from their teacher in the subject but also working with each other to learn, understand, and use math. Working in small groups, the students are helping each other learn math facts and multiplication facts. In addition to being put into small groups, the students were given flash cards to help them learn the facts about those subjects.
Learning math — or any other subject for that matter — and doing so by learning together and helping one another to understand the subject is what education is all about. Also, by learning to work together and assist one another in learning the subject being taught, the students are developing the habits of study and cooperation that will continue to serve them well long after their days at Foster Park Elementary School are behind them.
