UNION COUNTY — It wasn’t pretty Friday night for the annual Jacket Bowl, as Greer cruised to a 63-20 win over Union County.
The Union County offense struggled in the first half before finally getting on the score board with just over three minutes to go in the third quarter when Michael Purdie ran the ball in from three yards out for a touchdown.
Purdie would score again for Union County with 5:35 to go in the game when he punched it in from one yard to cut into the Greer lead. Union County’s final score came with 1:32 remaining in the game when Will Horlacher threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Quadrik Smith.
The Union County offense had a total of 259 yards of offense in the contest while the Greer offense managed 543 yards of total offense. Union’s offense had 167 yards on the ground and 92 through the air.
The Jackets will host Travelers Rest this week in the regular season finale. Quarterback Kesean Glover, who was banged up a little in the game Friday versus Greer is expected to be fine and play on Friday against the Devil Dogs.
The Devil Dogs are also 1-8 on the season and currently sit in last place in the region, as they are winless in region play. The Devil Dogs are averaging 12.5 points per game on offense, while surrendering nearly 36 points per game on defense.
The Playoff scenarios are fairly simple for Union County.
Win and you are the three seed. The three seed from this region will travel to the loser of Greenville at Belton Honea Path that takes place Friday night.
If the Jackets lose and Blue Ridge upsets Greer, Union County will not make the playoffs.
If Union County loses to Travelers Rest and Greer beats Blue Ridge then that will put Union, Blue Ridge, and TR into a three-way tie for third.
Defensive points allowed in the games between the three teams tied would break the tie. So in this scenario as long as the Jackets gave up less than 55 points to the Devil Dogs this week they would still make the playoffs.
If they are the three seed, again they would take on loser of BHP Greenville. If they are the four seed they would take on the winner of BHP Greenville.
Hopefully, Union County will take care of business this week and not level their destiny in the hands of anyone else.
Friday is senior night at Union County Stadium and 25 seniors will be honored.
