No Cost Meals For Students

All students enrolled in the Union County School District will be eligible to eat at school at no cost during the 2017-2018 school year.

The Union County School District is participating in the federal Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program that provides meals for all public school students at no cost to their families. Under the CEP, which is authorized through the federal Healthy, Hungry-Free Kids Act 2010, public students from 4K through high school are eligible to participate in the program and receive breakfast and lunch at school each school day.

In previous years, families had to meet certain income requirements in order for their children receive free or reduced cost meals at school, but that’s not the case with CEP. Under the CEP there is no income requirement for children to participate in the program. The elimination of the income requirements of previous years also eliminates the application process of previous years so parents or guardians do not need to return the Family Meal applications for the 2017-2018 school year. The elimination of this paperwork not only benefits the families of the students, it also helps schools reduce costs associated with collecting and processing those applications.

The school district is encouraging families to have their children take advantage of the program and enjoy two nutritious meals every school day. All school breakfast and lunch menus are planned according to the USDA’s nutrition guidelines, and include fresh fruit and vegetables.

Students participating in the program will still have to either use their ID Card or enter their PIN number to receive meals to ensure that each student only receives one reimbursable breakfast and one reimbursable lunch in a day. In addition to healthy meals some schools will offer students a variety of snack and beverage options that comply with the “Smart Snacks Sold in Schools” regulation. All optional items must be purchased. No charges will be allowed.

For more information about the CEP breakfast and lunch program at Union County Schools call Union County School District School Food Service Director Susan H. Thompson at 864-429-1748, Ext. 717.
