UNION COUNTY —Here’s some of what’s happening in sports in Union County.
Dixie Girls Teams In Tournament
Three Dixie Girls teams from Union County — one of them undefeated in the district tournament — are playing for the state championships in their respective leagues this weekend.
The following Union County Dixie Girls teams are representing the county in state tournament play which began Friday and runs through Wednesday. They will be playing against the following teams at the following locations:
• The 6U SweeTees will be playing in Iva.
• The 10U Angels will be playing in Dillon.
• The 15U Belles will be playing in Cheraw.
In addition to representing the county in state competition, the Angels are the District 5 X-Play Champions. The team won the district championship without losing a single game during the June 22-25 tournament held at Century B Park in Greer.
The SweeTees and the Belles are going to the state tournament through automatic bids. They received automatic bids because the Union County Dixie Girls program is much larger than the Dixie Girls programs in many other counties. This enabled the Union County program to have more players thus enabling more of its teams to go to state competition under automatic bids.
Though they are going under automatic bids, the SweeTees and the Belles also have impressive records for this season.
The Union County High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is seeking nominations of individuals to be considered for the Athletic Hall of Fame.
If you would like to nominate an individual from any of the county’s former high schools or Union County High School, you may do so by visiting the Union County Schools website and download the nomination form. Forms may also be picked up at Union County High School, Jonesville Elementary/Middle School, or Lockhart Schools.
After completing, please email the form to saddis_JES@union.k12.sc.us or mail the form to Union County High School Athletic Dept., 1163 Lakeside Drive, Union, SC 29379. All required information must be completed for nominations to be considered.
Completed forms must be in by July 31 in order to be considered for selection this year.
