Three awarded music scholarships

UNION — The Union Music Club has selected three students to receive scholarships for the 2017-2018 school year. The recipients are Ryan West, Meredith Foster, and Maisie Fisher.

Ryan West is the recipient of the Nancy Lewis Wilburn scholarship. This scholarship is named in loving memory of Mrs. Nancy Wilburn who was an enthusiastic supporter of music education for young people and an active member of the Union Music Club.

Ryan West, 21, is a senior at Charleston Southern University, majoring in Music Education. He takes private lessons in both percussion and piano and excels in both areas of study. Ryan studies percussion with Dr. Michael Haldeman and studies piano with Dr. Bradley Parker. Ryan is involved in a number of different ensembles: Jazz Band, Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, and Wind Ensemble. In the coming fall semester he will be also be in the Steel Drum Band. In Jazz Band, Ryan was the pianist and he occassionally also played piano in the wind ensemble, symphonic band, and percussion ensemble. Ryan is a pianist at his church, Faith Assembly of God at Goose Creek in Charleston. Ryan’s parents are Gene and Tammy West. His grandparents are Wade and Sadie Wilson, Maurice and Mary Hyder and the late Grady and Nellie West.

The Cornelia Greer Walker Scholarship is awarded to two students: Meredith Foster and Maisie Fisher.

Meredith Foster 19, is a sophomore at Presbyterian College. She is the daughter of Charles Michael and Miranda Foster. Meredith is a a voice student of Ms. Lucie Svatonova Hughes. Additionally, Meredith participates in the Presbyterian College Choir and Bella Voce, which is a women’s ensemble. This year, she competed in SCNATS, which is a statewide vocal competition. Before attending Presbyterian College, Meredith was a voice student of Dr. Cathy Starris at Lawson Academy of the Arts.

Maisie Fisher, 20, is a junior at Presbyterian College. Her parents are Frank and Tammy Fisher. Maisie is a piano student of Dr. Karen Buckland. She has had a total of 13 years of piano study so far. At Presbyterian College, Maisie participates in three ensembles: Pep Band, Wind Ensemble, and the Presbyterian College group. In the Pep Band, Maisie played piccolo in the Wind Ensemble she played flute. She performed three flute solos in the Presbyterian College spring concert.

Maisie Fisher and Meredith Foster both participated in the Christmas at Presbyterian College concert in December.

Before starting college both Maisie Fisher and Ryan West were piano students of Suzy Smith, and Maisie Fisher, Meredith Foster, and Ryan West were all members of the Union County High School Gifted and Talented Music Class.
