GAFFNEY — The victories just keep coming for local racer Earl Petty who won his first race of the season earlier this year.
Petty, 19, the son of Mike and Kim Petty, was the featured winner in the Renegade Division at Cherokee Motor Speedway in Gaffney on Saturday, May 13.
Saturday’s win was just the latest achievement for Petty, who, on Saturday, April 29, beat 12 other drivers to gain his first win of the season in the Renegade Division at the Cherokee Motor Speedway.
Petty’s win was a Mother’s Day gift for his mother, Kim, who, when he asked her what she wanted for Mother’s Day, said she wanted him to win another race. That’s just what he did, giving his mother the Mother’s Day gift she’d asked for.
Petty’s successes in 2017 are a continuation of the success he enjoyed in 2016 when he finished the year with a standing of 1540, just 16 points behind the 1556 of veteran Hall of Fame driver Mitchell Duvall. Petty’s performance was recognized at the Cherokee Motor Speedway’s 2016 Championship Banquet held Friday, Jan. 27 during which he and Buddy Cudd were presented with the Second Place Trophy.
Petty drives the No. 5 Monte Carlo car he and his father built. He is sponsored by Broad River Materials, Inc., The Tire Shop of Jonesville, Bailey’s Grill in Lockhart, Carter’s Auto Sales, Denton Gas Company, Inc., Mitchell Graphics, Mulls Starter and Alternator and Upstate Auto Auction in Spartanburg.
