UNION COUNTY — The Union County High School Lady Yellow Jacket Softball Team is now one win away from playing for the State Championship for a fourth year in a row. The Lady Jackets defeated Lancaster on Friday night 11-3 and North Augusta on Monday 7-4.
Friday’s game with Lancaster was a close one until the seventh inning when the Lady Jackets exploded for seven runs.
Union County trailed the Bruins heading into the fourth innning when the Lady Jackets were able to plate four runs on timely hitting by Rebecca Lee, who had an RBI single; Naquandria Ray, a two run homerun; and Ashley Vinson, who had an RBI double.
The Lady Jackets tacked on seven insurance runs in the seventh with RBIs by Bailey Betenbaugh, Kristin Kicidis, Jazmyne Boyd, Abbie Valentine, and Naquandria Ray added two more.
Bailey Betenbaugh pitched a complete game for Union County giving up three runs on four hits and only one of the runs was earned. Betenbaugh also struck out two Lancaster batters and walked five.
On Monday, the Lady Jackets traveled to North Augusta where they defeated the North Augusta Lady Jackets 7-4.
Union County jumped out to an early lead by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run homerun by Ashley Vinson.
Union County added another run in the second inning on a solo homer by Courtney Seymore.
Bailey Betenabugh added to the homerun total for the Lady Jackets in the fourth inning when she hit a three-run homerun of her own that put Union County up 7-2.
North Augusta added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-4 but that would be all the scoring in this contest.
Betenbaugh also pitched a complete game for the Union County allowing four earned runs on nine hits; she struck out two and walked five.
The Lady Jackets will play for the Upper State Championship on either Thursday or Friday depending on who wins the elimination game on Wednesday between North Augusta and Wren.
