UNION — The Union Music Club met on February 14, 2017 at 7 p.m. at Buffalo Baptist Church.

President Tommy Bishop welcomed everyone and invited the members to enjoy the delicious refreshments. The wonderful Valentine’s Day-inspired refreshments were prepared by members Mrs. Steve Ramsey and Mrs. Sam Elliott and were enjoyed by all. President Bishop thanked Buffalo Baptist Church for allowing the club to use the sanctuary and the musical instruments. He also thanked the hostesses for the refreshments.

First, the members recited the Invocation and the Federation Collect. Then, the members sang the “Federation Hymn” accompanied by President Bishop on the church organ. The February song entitled “Daisy Bell,” with words and music by Dacre from the “Together We Sing” songbook, was sung by all in attendance and accompanied by Mrs. Sam Elliott on the piano.

Treasurer Rev. Sanders Read presented the treasury report, and members were reminded to donate their Founder’s Day money. Secretary Miss Sally Summers presented the minutes from the January meeting, and they were approved. Then, President Bishop asked for any committee reports. He said that he had received two letters, one pertaining to Miss Meredith Foster for consideration for a scholarship and one for Ms. Becky Moore to be considered to become a new club member. A vote was taken, and it was unanimous to receive her into the club as a member.

President Bishop asked the nominating committee, Mrs. James Stepp, Mrs. Sanders Read, and Mrs. Joe Lawson, to start working on a slate of officers for next year.

Mrs. Leroy Kennedy presented a donation to the scholarship fund from her mother, member Mrs. Jack (Nancy) Wilburn. The entire club was extremely grateful for such a generous gift.

The evening’s Valentine’s Day program began with Mrs. James Stepp singing a traditional English melody entitled “The Gift of Love” accompanied by Mrs. George Goings. Mrs. George Goings played “Blessed Assurance” by Fanny Crosby with all members singing. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Turner performed the Elvis Presley song entitled “Love Me Tender” from 1956. Mr. Turner sang and Mrs. Turner played the piano. Mrs. Sanders Read played “Improvisation” by Edward MacDowell. Mrs. Leroy Kennedy played “What Wondrous Love Is This” on the piano. President Bishop played another arrangement of “What Wondrous Love Is This” arranged by Jan Sanborn and a version of “Jesus Loves Me” by Kim Williams. Mrs. James Stepp read a poem entitled “The Highwayman” by Alfred Noyes. In conclusion, Mrs. Steve Ramsey and Mrs. Sam Elliott played a duet on the piano entitled “The Love of God” arranged by Larry Shackley.

President Bishop thanked everyone for the wonderful Valentine’s Day program. All members were reminded that the next meeting will be at First Baptist Church on March 14 at 7 p.m. At that meeting, members will look forward to hearing the students who performed at the Junior Music Festival in Spartanburg.

The meeting ended with the singing of the benediction song entitled “The Gift of Song” by Lana M. Bailey accompanied by President Bishop.
