UNION — Grass is the focal point of the yard, and it can be the hardest part to maintain. If you struggle with maintaining your turf, or even if you have someone maintain it for you, join us at Piedmont Physic Garden’s upcoming workshop. Jason Bagwell will host “Make Your Turf Great Again” on Saturday, June 24 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Jason Bagwell is the Horticulture Department Chair at Spartanburg Community College, where he has been a professor since 2000. His courses focus on pest control, turf grass, and soil. He received his Master of Science in Agriculture Education and a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy from Clemson University.
Bagwell is passionate about horticulture because of his upbringing on a peach, row crop and cattle farm in Boiling Springs, S.C. He cites his parents and grandparents as his greatest inspiration. He enjoys learning about soil and turf, and talking about soil fertility and fertilizers. Currently, he manages a farm consisting of registered Aberdeen Angus Cattle and has 15 years of experience as a wholesale greenhouse grower.
According to Jason, the biggest pitfalls in maintaining turf are “finding reliable sources of granular organic fertilizers and weed management.” The workshop will focus on overcoming these obstacles and building an understanding of key components needed throughout the year to help your turf look good.
The workshop will be held at PPG, located at 301 E. South Street in Union, S.C. General admission is $20. To reserve your spot, register online on PPG’s website, www.piedmontphysicgarden.org, or send a check to Piedmont Physic Garden, PO Box 603, Union, SC 29379.
