BONHAM — The temporary recycling convenience center serving the Bonham community will remain open during the three days part of S.C. 18 is closed for the construction of a rail spur.
The Gonvauto South Carolina, LLC metal fabrication manufacturing facility currently under construction on a 24-acre site in the Bonham community will be linked the Norfolk & Southern Railroad line that runs along S.C. 18 by a spur which is also under construction. To link the spur with the railroad line part of S.C. 18 will be closed to through traffic for three days beginning at 6 a.m. Thursday. Construction of the final section of the spur is projected be completed and the section of S.C. 18 reopened to through traffic at 6 a.m. Sunday.
While the spur is being extended across S.C. 18, through traffic will be detoured along a route that will include Toney Road, U.S. 176, and Highpoint Road. Kelly Road, Pineland Road, and Pineview Road will remain open. Local traffic for residences and businesses will be maintained while the work is completed except in approximately 500 feet of the construction area.
To accommodate the construction of the spur, Union County closed the recycling convenience center serving the Bonham community in August. A temporary facility accepting only household garbage and cardboard was opened later that month on a hill a few hundred feet away from the site of the old convenience center.
While the section of S.C. 18 near the facility will closed for three days, Union County Supervisor Tommy Sinclair said the facility itself will remain open.
“You won’t be able to access it from the Union or south side of eighteen,” Sinclair said. “You will, however, be able to approach it from the Jonesville or northern side so it will remain open.”
Union County Public Works Director John Gibson said those living on the south side of S.C. 18 who use the facility will still be able to access it through the detour.
“You can take the Toney Road around U.S. 176 to Highpoint Road and get there from the north side of the highway,” Gibson said. “The facility will be operating on its normal schedule of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.”
Once the spur is built and construction on the Gonvauto facility completed, the county plans to build a new, state-of-the-art recycling center on the site of the temporary facility.
