The Fair Forest Chapter, NSDAR, met February 5 in the Union County Museum meeting room.

Regent Margaret McCarley called the meeting to order. Jane Owenby read the Devotional from the Baptist Hymnal. Chairman Amy Bruce led the chapter in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the U.S., the American’s Cred, the Salute to the Flag of S.C., and the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner.

Chairman Martha Whitener read the President General’s message, “Restoring Our National Cemeteries.”

Ben Loftis, director of the Union County Carnegie Library, presented the program “Family Search and Family History.” The UCCL was the first Carnegie library built in South Carolina and funded in 1903 by steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie. One condition of the grant required that communities receiving funds must contribute 10 percent of his original donation amount every year thereafter to provide for the maintenance and operate the library as a public institution. The library 3,500 in the collection of books, DVDs, and CDs as well as a dedicated staff, including genealogist Bernise Bryson, for the support of their patrons and visitors. In July 2012, the library became the third affiliate library in South Carolina to offer the program “Family Search.”

The next meeting, March 5, will be held in the Union County Museum meeting room with Jeff Fallows, Clemson Extension Service, who will present the program “Fire Wise Home.”
