JONESVILLE — A gospel celebration to be held in Jonesville this Saturday will celebrate generations of quartet-style gospel singing.

The event is being billed as The Gospel Originals Pre-Anniversary Celebration. It will celebrate the 21st anniversary of The Gospel Originals, of Aiken, singing together as a group.

The group’s lead singer — Elder Calvin Staley — pointed out that before the group took on the name of The Gospel Originals, it actually originated as The Staley Brothers, which featured his father, Calvin Staley. The original Staley Brothers started singing together in 1927.

“This anniversary is so important to us because it’s a carry-on of our father’s legacy,” Staley said. “We are keeping quartet singing alive when there are so many genres of singing out there, and we are keeping our father’s legacy and wishes alive.”

The group’s members include Elder Calvin Staley, Bernard Johnson, Brian Staley, Douglas Staley, Clarence Garvin and A.J. Fluitt.

Staley said the group’s accompanying musicians — who are the singers’ sons — will provide an upbeat, driving force behind traditional gospel songs. They will play keyboard, lead guitar, bass guitar and drums.

“We are a third generation of quartet singers,” Staley said.

Other groups to perform Saturday are traveling from various parts of South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia, and one group is coming in from St. Louis. Some of the other performers will include Shawn Brown & Da Boyz, Southland Troubadours, The Golden Trumpets, Bless-Ed, Devonte & The Voices of Zion and Christian comedian Tommy Ingram.

“Everybody is welcome to celebrate at these services,” Staley said. “We would greatly appreciate their help and support to make this happen.

Doors will open at 4 p.m. and services will begin at 5 p.m. Advance tickets are available at Oscar’s Clothing in Union and at the Jonesville Town Hall.
