UNION — Union County High School hosted a special luncheon this week to honor teachers who have retired from the school.
Wednesday’s event was the second annual luncheon for UCHS retirees, and Principal Floyd Lyles said the event was a huge success.
“Last year was the first one, and some people didn’t know what to expect,” Lyles said. “This year, they had marked their calendars and were excited. It was good to have everyone back in the building.”
Lyles said it was great to see in attendance school district representatives Superintendent Dr. Kristi Woodall and board members Dr. Wanda All, Kakie White and Jane Wilkes, who attended as both a board member and a retired UCHS teacher.
Lyles also mentioned he enjoyed seeing teachers attend who taught at the same time he did, such as Linda Lybrand, Barbara Ramsey and Melanie Rabb. Lyles pointed out that Rabb — who celebrated a birthday Wednesday — was presented with flowers sent to the luncheon by her husband, Bo.
Those in attendance were also treated with a performance by the UCHS Chorus led by Leah Pace.
“The chorus was absolutely outstanding,” Lyles said.
The chorus sang a variation of “Jingle Bells,” which included creative student additions such as acting, sound effects, drums and chants. Following the performance, Billy Jack Moore teased the chorus that he could sing better than they.
“He tried to sing a song for everyone, but he sang a few notes and we stopped him,” Lyles laughed.
Others who were specially recognized at the luncheon included Carolyn Hardy — who organized the event — and the UCHS cafeteria staff — who stayed over after their shift to assist with the meal.
“It was a great way to close the first semester,” Lyles said.
