JONESVILLE — As Christmas gets nearer and nearer, Santa Claus is busier and busier, but he’s still found time to put in an appearance at The Potters Storehouse during the church’s next food distribution this Saturday.
Pastor Don Moore announced Wednesday that, despite his increasingly busy schedule, Santa Claus will be at the church to hear children’s Christmas wishes and to assist the church in handing out some gifts.
“Santa will be here on Saturday though he won’t be able to stay as long as he did at our last distribution on Dec. 8,” Moore said. “He’s got pressing business in Santa Land so he’s only going to be here at 11. He’ll have some small gifts for the children and we’ll make sure all the children get something.”
While the primary purpose of Saturday’s event is to provide needy families with food, Moore said he’s received a number of phone calls from people who are asking for the church’s help in providing their children with presents for Christmas.
“I’ve had a lot of phone calls from people who are down on their luck due to being sick or being unemployed and are having trouble getting their children toys for Christmas,” Moore said. “I’ve also had several calls from people asking if we have any clothes we can let them have for their children.”
Moore said the church is going to try and get all the toys, children’s clothes and other items for children it can find to make available to families in need of Christmas gifts for their children. He said if anyone wants to donate even used toys or clothing that is in good condition the church will accept them and distribute them on Saturday.
At its Dec. 8 distribution, the church provided more than 850 families with boxes of food and Moore said the distribution depleted the church’s supply of such traditional Christmas fare as hams and turkeys. Nevertheless, Moore said the church should still be able to provide meat to anyone who comes to Saturday’s distribution.
“A lot of people have called about turkey or ham and while we don’t have any of those we will do everything we can to make sure everybody gets meat for Christmas,” Moore said. “We’re going to have plenty of other food for Saturday so we’re still going to give out boxes of food to everyone who shows up.”
As with gifts for children, Moore said the church is accepting donations of food for Saturday’s distribution and will continue to accept them that morning.
“We’ll accept donations that morning before the distribution and even during it,” Moore said. “We’ll be glad to take any food anyone wants to donate.”
