UNION — The Miracle League of Union County is $5,000 closer to its goal after a donation made by a woman in memory of her late husband.

The MLUC board of directors welcomed to the meeting special guest Barbara Rippy who told board members that she lost her husband — the late Bobby Rippy — on Oct. 29, and she wanted to do something in his memory. With tears in her eyes, Rippy told board members that she and her husband had discussed the MLUC, and she said he knew how much she loved serving as a member of Civitan with MLUC board chair Amy Austin.

Rippy then presented a check for $5,000 — a donation to The Miracle League of Union County — as a memorial to her late husband.

“He always tried to be good to the people of Union County, and the people of Union County have always been good to us,” Rippy said during the presentation Monday. “I feel like he is looking down on us and smiling now.”

Rippy went on to say she feels MLUC is a worthy cause and more people should realize how important it is.

Austin said she is excited to have been able to work with Rippy through Civitan and the Foster Parent Association, pointing out that the Rippys generously allowed the FPA to use their store on Main Street for the Sheltering Arms Resale Shop.

“She has been so generous,” Austin said. “I’m happy to have met her and learned what the true meaning of giving is.”

The MLUC is currently in the process of raising $60,000 to meet a challenge by the Timken Family Foundation of Canton, Ohio. The foundation donated $25,000 to the league in October and challenged the people of Union County to raise $60,000 by August of 2013. If the amount is raised by that time, the foundation will match it with another $60,000.

Counting Rippy’s donation, the MLUC has now raised $33,000 toward that $60,000 challenge.

Monday’s meeting also included refreshments provided by Erma Cato and also served as a Christmas get-together for board members.

Other business discussed during the meeting included the UCARE (Union County Aide and Relief Effort) 12 Days of Christmas drawing, from which all proceeds will be given to the MLUC. Drawings will take place daily — beginning today — through Sunday, Dec. 23.

The winners will be announced each day at 9:05 a.m. on WBCU and will receive $100 cash. Tickets are $1 each (or six for $5) and can be bought at WBCU, Union County Recreation Department, Union County Airport, Timken Sports Complex or from members of the MLUC board.

Board members also announced that pages have been built for the MLUC’s website — www.themiracleleagueofunioncounty.org — and the site will be up and running soon. Look for more information about the website as it becomes available in upcoming editions of The Union Daily Times or at www.uniondailytimes.com.
