JONESVILLE — Nearly 900 local families’ Thanksgiving dinners will be complete thanks to the efforts of The Potter’s Storehouse.
Pastor Don Moore and a host of volunteers conducted an annual Thanksgiving food distribution Tuesday at The Potter’s Storehouse. Although the distribution was scheduled to run from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., it actually ran until around 3:30 p.m.
“It was a long day, but it was a good day,” Moore said. “It all came together and went off pretty much without a hitch. We had a lot of smiles — a lot of happy people. It was just amazing.”
Two weeks ago, Moore started raising funds and collecting food specially for Tuesday’s distribution through the newspaper and radio. He said during that time around $5,000 was raised with both monetary and food donations. Funds raised also helped pay for the storehouse’s utilities and bill at Second Harvest Food Bank.
“If it wasn’t for the help and support of the community in Union County, we wouldn’t be able to do it,” Moore said. “It will take a load off of me and give us a little relief going into Christmas.”
Moore said between 750 to 775 turkeys were given away on Tuesday, as well as other meat items including hams, ribs and roasts. The church also delivered food on Monday.
“Some didn’t get a turkey earlier on because we limited it to a larger family size, but on into it, we were pretty much giving everyone a turkey,” Moore said, explaining that those who didn’t receive a turkey got another item such as a ham.
Moore said he is overwhelmed each year when those who participate in the distributions express heartfelt thanks. He mentioned hearing comments like, “I could just cry because I didn’t think we’d have a turkey this year,” or, “This is going to make our Thanksgiving.”
“People are so thankful to be able to have a turkey,” Moore said.
Tuesday’s distribution provided food for close to 900 families.
“We’re bordering on a record for one distribution,” Moore said. “We’re excited about that.”
Moore said he was glad to see a slight increase in the number of donations so close to the holidays.
“Everybody is wanting help at whatever level they can,” he said. “Whether they can spare a few dollars or a few hundred, it will all help and go a long way to meet the needs of others.”
Moore said now that the The Potter’s Storehouse is finished with this year’s Thanksgiving distribution, he is gearing up for the December distribution events, which will include special holiday items to get families in the Christmas spirit.
