This year’s match-up in the first week of region play will set the tone for the winning Yellow Jackets’ team.
The Union County Yellow Jackets (2-3) have strung together two consecutive wins thanks in part to an increase in offensive production.
Union County defeated Woodruff last week, 35-30, behind Victor Ruth’s three touchdown receptions.
Head coach Will Young is in his sixth season at Greer and this year’s group is an experienced one with 16 starters returning from last year.
Greer is coming off a 57-0 blowout win last Thursday over Eastside. Quarterback Reese Hannon led Greer’s balanced offensive attack that included 226 rushing yards and 256 passing yards vs. the Eastside Eagles.
However, Greer’s eight-touchdown and some change margin win vs. Eastside (0-5) is not to be overlooked but Eastside has scored only 14 points the entire season.
In addition to last week’s win, Greer posted victories over Seneca and Berea. The team’s two losses came vs. Rock Hill, 29-28, in overtime and against Greenville, 23-9.
Hannon has a quarterback style like that of Union County’s Keiston Smith. Hannon is capable of putting up 100 yards on the ground and 200 passing yards in a game.
Greer was unable to pick up the blitzes vs. Greenville and the Red Raiders sacked Greer’s junior quarterback five times.
Greer starters Dakari Sitton and D’Anta Fleming sat out last week’s game to nurse shoulder injuries, according to reports from the Greer Yellow Jackets Web site. Sitton is the Yellow Jackets leading rusher and Fleming is third behind Hannon.
Wide receivers Quadrick Mack and Jon Redmon lead the Yellow Jackets in receiving yards.
Defensively, Greer is led by Duke signee Mario Sanders. The senior defensive end is quick and explosive off the snap of the ball. Sanders is an athletic end with an interception touchdown return this season.
Players to watch:
UCHS: K Brandon Shetley, entire offensive line, DB Josh Armstrong, DE Desmond Floyd
Greer: QB Reese Hannon, WR Quadrick Mack, DE Mario Sanders, WR Jon Redmon
Union County 21
Greer 17
