Wallace Thomson Hospital held its annual Free Men’s Health PSA Screening on Saturday, Aug. 21.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by cells of the prostate gland. The PSA test measures the level of PSA in the blood. A blood sample is taken and the amount of PSA is measured in the Union hospital’s laboratory. DREs — or digital rectal exams — together with a PSA test can help doctors detect prostate cancer in men who have no symptoms of the disease, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Early detection is the key to stopping cancer and Wallace Thomson Hospital provides this test for men at no cost to them during this annual event.

More than 150 men from all areas of the community lined up for their annual test.

Us TOO representatives volunteered their time again with this year’s health fair. Us TOO International is a prostate cancer education and support network group that has been helping survivors and their families for 20 years. The organization can be found on the Web by visiting www.ustoo.org.

The Wallace Thomson Hospital physicians and staff donated their time and talent to these gentlemen.

The Hospital would like to thank the physicians: Fred Barker, MD and Erica Savage-Jeter, MD, and volunteers: Susan Foster, director of laboratory services; Shelia Jeter, RN, BSN, director of case management; Ann Littlejohn; Andrea Whitener; Carrie Davis; Janet Fox; Brenda Mowdy, RN; and Quanisha Savage for their extraordinary efforts to make this year’s PSA screening event a success.

Wallace Thomson Hospital is pleased to continue offering valued services to the community through annual and community or employer health fairs.

Please ask your community leader or employer if the PSA blood test can be available during your local health fair event.
