The City of Union hopes to create money savings for many residents with a newly implemented program.

The city has partnered with the National League of Cities (NLC) to participate in the NLC Prescription Discount Card Program in collaboration with CVS Caremark.

“This will help some with the high cost of prescriptions,” said Union Mayor Harold Thompson. “I think it’s a good program, and it doesn’t cost the city or citizens anything.”

The discount cards offer an average of 20 percent off the full retail cost of prescription medication for residents who are without health insurance or have prescriptions that are not covered by a traditional pharmacy benefit plan.

Those taking advantage of the discount card program would have access to savings at more than 59,000 participating pharmacies across the country, including pharmacies in Union. Residents and family members may use the discount cards any time their prescription is not covered by insurance.

There are no fees, restrictions or limits on how often the card may be used.

“We are also glad to partner with the NLC in this effort,” Thompson said. “There will probably be more situations where we partner with them.”

Thompson first learned of the NLC Prescription Discount Card Program during several NLC Conferences he has attended, including one particular conference in San Antonio, Texas where he was awarded a bronze certificate for completion of 32 NLC classes.

The NLC is the oldest and largest organization in the United States with the mission to strengthen and promote cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance.

The discount cards went into effect Aug. 1 and can be picked up at the following locations:

• Union City Hall

• Union County Carnegie Library

• The Senior Citizens Center

• Union Housing Authority

• Union County Courthouse

• Clemson Extension Office
