In the past week the Union County Sheriff’s Office has made four arrests and recovered nearly $30,000 worth of property stolen in two burglaries.

Sheriff David Taylor announced Friday his office had recovered almost all the property stolen over the past week from a Jonesville area business and a residence on the Neals Shoals Road in the Union area.

Kevin Lee Boyter, 25, 297 Sweetwater Drive, Buffalo, and James Burton Medford, 26, 3117 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Union, are each charged with burglay third-degree and grand larceny in connection with the Neals Shoals Road incident. Boyter is also charged by the sheriff’s office with failure to stop for a blue light, operating an uninsured vehicle and driving under suspension.

The incident report states sometime between midnight July 24 and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, $21,050 worth of property was stolen from two outbuildings and the yard of a residence at 1789 Neals Shoals Road. The items stolen included four dirt bikes, 13 motor blocks, an air compressor, a black dinner bell and four tires and rims.

Taylor said Friday except for the four tires and rims all the items had been recovered.

During the course of the investigation, the incident report states deputies received information Boyter had stolen a dirt bike and was staying on Pineland Road. Deputies went to Pineland Road on Thursday to look for Boyter and on their way there they saw a white male later identitifed as Boyter traveling down the road on a dirt bike. The report states the bike matched the description of one of those stolen and the deputies turned around, switched on their blue light and siren.

Boyter, however, refused to stop and continued on the road for a quarter of a mile before jumping off it and running into the woods. The K-9 Unit was brought in to track Boyter and located him in the woods near Pineland Road. He was taken into custody and transported to jail.

Medford was taken into custody at a Union residence Wednesday afternoon.

Taylor said the case is still under investigation.

Jonesville

Not under investigation is the burglary which took place at a Jonesville area businesss at 1088 Gaffney Highway between 5 p.m. July 23 and 8:30 a.m. Monday. Nearly $8,000 worth of property, including two dirt bikes, several tools and copper wire were stolen, all of which Taylor said have been recovered.

Arrested Monday afternoon and charged with burglary second-degree in the incident are Christopher Kelly Lancaster, 23, 1815 Mudbridge Road, Buffalo, and Dustin Ray Bailey, 22, 121 Harley Drive, Buffalo.

The incident report states deputies dispatched to the scene found the fence at the front of the plant behind a thicket had been cut. It appeared the burglars had forced their way in through a bay door at the back of the warehouse shipping dock. The glass door to the maintenance shop had been broken out and large pieces of metal had been placed in two industrial grinders in an apparent attempt to damage the blades.

Lancaster and Bailey’s arrest was first reported by The Union Daily Times online and in Thursday’s print edition.

Taylor attributed the quick arrest and recoveries to the hard work of his deputies and detectives.

“This was just good work by our detectives and patrol officers in following up leads on the information we received,” Taylor said. “We’ve had two individuals to run this week and our K-9 Unit has caught both of them. That includes the suspect in the bank robbery in Spartanburg. I also appreciate the cooperation we’ve had with other agencies including the City of Union and Spartanburg in apprehending the bank robbery suspects.”

Deputies called in the K-9 Unit Thursday evening to track down Harold David Scott III, 107 Ferguson Lane, Union, who was being sought by the Spartanburg Police Department in connection with the Tuesday morning robbery of the First Citizens Bank in Spartanburg. Scott was taken into custody 100 yards into the woods off Honeybee Circle off the Sardis Road. He is charged in Spartanburg with armed robbery and entering a bank with the intent to steal.

Also taken into custody in connection with the case is Francis Johnson III, 405 Drugstore St., Buffalo. Johnson turned himself in at the sheriff’s office Thursday afternoon before being transported to Spartanburg where he is charged with accessory before the fact of a felony and accessory after the fact of a felony.

Taylor said he hopes the response of his office to these incidents and the ensuring quick arrest and recoveries of property will serve as a deterrent to criminals.

“We just hope our quick response will be a deterrent to people thinking about a life of crime in Union County,” he said.
