Smoking in bed with an oxygen tank nearby proved to be a fatal combination for a Union woman.

Betty Painter Boulware died Thursday, July 15, from injuries she received from a fire at her home nearly a week earlier.

The incident report filed by the Union Public Safety Department states firefighters were dispatched the afternon of July 12 to Boulware’s home at 308 Robin Hood Circle. Union County EMS was already on scene when firefighters arrived but, according to Fire Commander Larry Robinson, Boulware was still inside the building.

Robinson said he was told by the officers on scene the fire began when Boulware was smoking in bed while using oxygen in order to breathe bettter. EMS personnel brought Boulware out of her home, put her in the ambulance and transported her to City Park where she was airlifted by Regional One to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

The fire was out by the time firefighters arrived, but Robinson said they found Boulware’s bed had been burned and there was smoke throughout the house. They used a positive pressure fan to clear the building of the smoke.

Union County Coroner William Holcombe said Monday after Boulware was taken to Spartanburg she was transported to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga., where she remained until her death.

Holcombe added Boulware died from complications relating to the burns she received to more than 70 percent of her body in the incident.

Funeral services for Boulware were held Friday.
