A Human Resources meeting was held at the Career Source Center on Wednesday for a group of local employers and employees whose work involves human resources in some capacity.

Gus Soto — manager of South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce’s Union Workforce Center — and Jennifer Foster — Union Workforce Center Unemployment Claims Supervisor — were the guest speakers at Wednesday’s meeting.

Their purpose was to inform the HR group of legal updates, employment loss and unemployment insurance in general.

According to SCDEW information, Union currently has a 17.2% unemployment rate. It is believed, however, the actual rate is higher because there are many people who no longer receive unemployment benefits but still are not working.

The group also discussed ways to stop abuse of the unemployment system.

The SCDEW was formerly known as the Employment Security Commission.
