Blaze destroys vacant home

A fire that destroyed a vacant house is being investigated by the Union County Sheriff’s Office as a possible act of arson.

The incident report states the fire started around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. The house, located at 119 Haney Road, Buffalo, has been vacant since the beginning of June and the house did not have electricity. Firefighters at the scene believed the blaze began on the porch where a number of boxes had been sitting

The house was at total loss with damage estimated at $100,000.

Pointing A Firearm

A Union man was arrested this week in connection with an incident in April in which he allegedly pointed a gun at another man.

James Randall Nash, 25, 203 Highland Drive, Union, is charged by the Union Public Safety Department with pointing a firearm.

The warrant for Nash’s arrest states that on April 25 he did point and present a long handle gun with a banna clip at a man on Horseshoe Circle. Nash was taken into custody Wednesday.

Possession Of A Stolen Firearm/Stolen Goods

A Union man ended up in jail after a pair of discarded underwear were found to conceal a stolen gun.

Christopher Deauntray Gist, 17, 121 Woodlawn Avenue, Union, is charged by the public safety department with possession of a stolen firearm and possession of stolen goods.

The incident report states an officer was on patrol in the area of East South Street shortly after 3 a.m. Wednesday when he observed a black male walking west on South Street. The officer observed the male quickly lean over behind a utility pole and drop a red package behind as he approached him. He also observed the male appear to conceal some other object in his right hand.

When the officer turned his vehicle around the male fled. The officer contacted other officers about the direction the subject was fleeing in. The other officers were able to detain the subject who was identified as Gist.

The officer who had first spotted Gist retrieved the pacakage he had placed behind the utility pole. The report states it was a pair of balled up red shorts which contained a pair of boxer shorts and a Rossi .38 caliber handgun.

Gist was then trasported back to the scene where he was advised of his rights and then questioned about the item he had concealed in his right hand. The report states that these were bullets which Gist said he dropped by the utility pole at he corner of South and Mountain streets. The bullets were recovered by the officer who recovered the gun and underwear.

When the gun’s serial number was run through NCIC officers learned it had been reported stolen in Spartanburg. Gist was placed under arrest and transported to the Union County Jail where an investigator from Spartanburg was expected to question him the next day about the gun.

Criminal Domestic Violence

A Union couple ended up in jail after a domestic dispute turned violent.

Lisa Michelle Thomas, 40, and Mark Lucas Thomas, 45, both of 119 Kissy Creek Circle, Union, are charged by the sheriff’s office with criminal domestic violence.

The incident states a deputy was dispatched Wednesday morning to the couple’s residence in reference to a domestic dispute. When he arrived, the deputy noticed the inside of the building had been destroyed. Mark Thomas came out of the bedroom bleeding from his head. He told the deputy his wife had hit him in the head with a stick.

Lisa Thomas had gone to a neighbor’s house and the deputy had dispatch call her to have her meet him at her residence. Thomas told the deputy she told her husband to get up and go to the hospital to see his mother and he had jumped on her. She said while he was hitting and choking her she was able to get a board off the floor and knock him off of her.

The report states the Thomases both had visible physical injuries and both were telling different stories. They were both placed under arrest and transported to jail where they were charged with criminal domestic violence.

Assault And Battery Third Degree

A woman was arrested Wednesday and charged withhitting another woman at the beginning of the week.

Shannon Michelle Moore, 34, 1203 Old Buncombe Road, Union, is charged by the sheriff’s office with assault and battery third-degree. Moore is charged in connection with an incident that occurred early Sunday morning at 336 Bailey Road in which a woman claims she was attacked by a total of three other women. The victim said the first woman stuck her in the face and while she was on the ground two other women kicked her in the head.

Burglary First-Degree

A Union man was arrested July 2 and charged in connection with a burglary in which the burglar allegedly make his escape by kicking the man who tried to catch him.

Borris Lamont Smith, 26, 178 Summer Valley Road, Buffalo, is charged by the sheriff’s office with burglary first-degree.

Smith is charged in connection with a burglary at a residence at 174 Summer Valley Road early July 2. The complainant said he went to his mother’s house to use the bathroom and while there he heard someone in the house. He saw a black male leaving through a living room window and tried to stop him by grabbing his foot. The burglar kicked free and ran down Summer Valley Road toward the Linersville Road.

The burglary occurred just before 4 a.m. July 2. Smith was taken into custody that evening.

The following incident is being investigated by the public safety department:

Shot Fired

Officers responding to a report of a fight and a gunshot at an apartment complex at 1111 Lakeside Drive early Wednesday morning did not find the person or persons responsible but did find a loaded gun. The weapon was a black 9mm Highpoint semi-automatic officers found on the ground beside a porch at an apartment where a man standing outside with a gun had been reported.

Though one 16-year-old was taken to the public safety department for questioning and a gunshot residue test was performed no arrests were made and the teen was released to his mother. The person who originally reported the male with the gun declined to speak further with police.

Arrests

The following persons were arrested by the public safety department:

Jay Noland Gist, 38, 3666 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Union, charged Wednesday with failure to surrender SC driver’s license, driving under suspension and seatbelt violation.

Jessica Ann Sherbert, 23, 130 Rawson Avenue, Spartanburg, charged Friday with driving under suspension first offense.

Willie Salter, 54, 221 E. Main St., Apt. 101, Union, charged Thursday with disorderly conduct/public drunk.

Timothy Warren Tucker, 48, 227 Lukesville Road, Buffalo, charged Thursday with disorderly conduct.

The following persons were arrested by the sheriff’s office:

Thomas Jay Elston, 19, 206 Osborne St., Union, chaged Tuesday with consumption of beer by a minor.

Mitzi Leigh Fleming, 39, 1488 Shiloh Church Road, Pauline, charged Wednesday with three counts of fraudulent check.

Jaran Harris, 23, 443 Whitlock Lake Road, Jonesville, charged Thursday with resisting arrest.
