JONESVILLE — The church that has spent so much time since last fall making sure the people of Union County are fed is trying something a little different this weekend.

It’s going to help people stay cool.

The Potters House of Jonesville will distribute 300 new “still-in-the-box” 20-inch fans to people in need on Saturday, July 10.

The fans were donated to the church by a local family in Jonesville and will be given out to people who are registered with the church’s food distribution and food bank programs.

Fans will be given out from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday and vouchers to receive a fan will be handed out just like at the church’s monthly food distribution events. Only one fan per family will be given out until all 300 are gone.

“We are very excited to have the fans,” said Potters House Pastor Don Moore.

He added, however, the hope is for all 300 fans to go to only those most in need of help staying cool.

“We ask that if you have air conditioning at home please don’t take a fan,” Moore said. “There are so many that need the fans desperately to help them survive the heat.”

Saturday’s fan distribution will also serve as a time for people to register for the church’s food bank and food distribution programs but absolutely no food will be available for distribution this weekend.

Moore said if there still are fans available, those new registrants most in need will be allowed to receive one at the end of distribution.

The Potters House has served more than 2,000 families since it began its food bank program last fall through food distribution events once each month. The most recent food distribution event handed out more than 35,000 pounds of food to people in need from Union County and surrounding areas.

The next distribution day is slated for Saturday, July 24, from 9 a.m.-noon at the church in Jonesville.

Moore said the last event pretty much wiped out the church’s supply of food so more is needed to continue the food programs.

Anyone interested in donating food — canned goods, cereal, rice, sugar, flour and all other non-perishable items — or funds to help support the program should contact Moore at (864) 680-3465.

The pastor also said anyone wishing to donate fans or functioning air conditioners should also get in touch with him.
