The Union Public Safety Department is searching for two men who robbed and beat a man early Wednesday morning.

The incident report states an officer was dispatched shortly before 4 a.m. to a residence at East Henrietta Street in reference to an armed robbery. The victim told the officer he’d been walking near the 200 block of Lispsey Street when he was approached by two black males. He described them as being approximately 5’9” tall and weighing approximtely 140 lbs. and 20-30 years of age, wearing white t-shirts and jeans.

The victim said he was on his way home when the two approached him, took the stick he was carrying away from him and hit him with it, knocking him to the ground. He said he was hit in the back and about the head with the stick. The man said his attackers then took $190 from his pants pocket. He said he got up, ran to the residence on East Henrietta Street and asked the homeowner to call 911.

The report states the victim requested EMS take him to Wallace Thomson Hospital to have his injuries checked. The officer noticed redness to the victim’s back around his shoulders. The victim also told the officer he’d been drinking earlier in the evening.

A search of the area failed to turn up the attackers. The victim was given a victim’s form and advised investigators would be contacting him in regard to the incident.

Shoplifting

Three people are facing charges after authorities found stolen Wii games in their car and in a woman’s purse.

Steven Jason Moore, 29, 211 Maple St., Pacolet; Michael Everettte Gwinn, 48, 696 Maywood St., Spartanburg; and Laura Ashley Gwinn, 26, also of Maywood St., Spartanburg, are each charged by the public safety department with shoplifting.

The incident report states officers were dispatched Tuesday afternoon to a business at 513 N. Duncan Bypass in reference to a shoplifter. While enroute, the officers were advised the suspects were going to a gold car in the parking lot and then that they were going back into the store. When they arrived, one officer went to a vehicle matching the desrcption they’d received and blocked it in with his patrol car.

The officer then spoke with the driver who identified himself as Michael Gwinn. The officer then told Gwinn why he’d made contact with him and Gwinn responsed that he was waiting on his daughter and a friend of hers who were in the store.

The report states that at that time another officer went and met with the store’s loss prevention agent who said a white female and white male had went back into the store. The loss prevention agent said he witnessed the female stuff items in her purse and then take them out of the store to the gold car. He said the male, identified as Moore and the female, identified as Laura Gwinn, went back into the store for more items. The two were apprehended outside the store.

The two were approached by the officer and the loss prevention agent who asked Gwinn if they could look in her purse. She allowed them and the report states several Wii games were found. The report states a search of the gold car turned up more Wii games in the rear passenger side floor.

The Gwinn’s and Moore were then placed under arrest. The items, which had a combined value of $371, were recovered.

Another Shoplifting

A woman is accused of shoplifting less than $9 worth of motor oil.

Arnethia Chamise Thompson, 21, 1007 Santuc Drive, Carlisle, is charged by the public safety department with shoplifting.

The warrant for Thompson’s arrest states that on May 25 at a convenience store at 803 S. Pinckney St. she concealed two quarts of motor oil with a total value of $8.46 in her purse.

Summer Slam II

The anti-drug Summer Slam II operation continues to generate arrests.

The latest to be arrested is Stephvon Dangelo Tucker, 20, 508 Boyce St., Union, charged with distribution of crack cocaine and distribution of crack cocaine within a half mile of a park. In addition to the Summer Slam II charges, Tucker is charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession of marijuana within a half mile of a school

Summer Slam II has resulted in more than 40 arrests since it got under way June 2. The sweep is part of a long term strategy by the public safety department and the Union County Sheriff’s Office to dismantle the drug trade in the county. The goal is to build up as many charges as possible against those arrested to the point where they are faced with the choice of cooperating with authorities against the higher level financiers and suppliers or serve long prison sentences.

Assault And Battery

Hitting a motorist on the arm is a good way to end up in jail, especially if there are witnesses who say you did it.

Steven Lamont Smith, 28, 107 Scott St., Union, is charged by the public safety department with assault and battery.

The incident report states an officer was dispatched Monday afternoon to the area of Blassingame and Thomas streets. When the officer arrived, he was met by the victim who said he’d been riding his moped up Blassingame when Smith ran out into the road and hit him on his right arm with a stick.

The officer also questioned a witness who was on a moped behind the victim. The witness said a black male hit the victim on the arm with a stick. Both the witness and the victim said the attacker was sitting on a porch on Blassingame Street.

The report states the responding officer and two other officers went to the Blassingame residence and found Smith sitting on the porch. They questioned Smith who said he and the victim had been having words over the past couple of weeks but denied hitting him.

Further investigation, however, lead to another witness who told officers he’d been at Lybrand and Blassingame and saw a black male run and hit a white male on a moped with a stick. The report states that after talking to the witness an officer placed Smith under arrest.
